Kitchen tools
Ingredients you might need to pick up
- Butternut squash ravioli – We got ours at Costco, of course feel free to try making a homemade ravioli or use your favorite brand.
- Butter – We are going to transform your basic butter to a toasty brown butter.
- Fresh sage – This really make the sauce, using dried sage won’t give you the strong sage flavor that the fresh leaves provide.
- Garlic

How to make this butternut squash ravioli sauce
Brown the butter. In a large skillet over medium-low heat, allow the butter to melt slowly. To ensure it doesn’t scorch, you will want to stir constantly, letting it cook slowly for approximately 5 minutes. If you need a step by step tutorial on browning butter this is a great post to learn how to do it perfectly.
Season the sauce. Once you’ve achieved beautifully browned butter, you can incorporate the garlic, sage, and a pinch of salt into the pan. Sauté the aromatic blend for a few minutes; you’ll notice the sauce starting to bubble and foam slightly. Remove it from the heat or continue cooking until your ravioli is ready to be stirred in.
Cook the ravioli. In a large pot of salted water, cook the ravioli according to package directions. Make sure to cook from frozen if package instructs, this will affect cooking time. You can tell the ravioli is cooked when it floats to the top of the water. Reserve ½ cup of pasta water, drain and transfer to brown butter sage sauce.
Everything you need to know about making butternut squash ravioli with sauce
While butternut squash ravioli is typically served as a meatless main dish, that does not mean you can’t serve some protein along with it. Some grilled chicken, Italian sausage or even shrimp would be great served with these ravioli. You could even add some toasted nuts to the sauce for an additional protein boost.
Our favorite dish to serve along with butternut squash ravioli is this kale caesar salad. It’s hearty and simple, and it won’t outshine the flavors of the brown butter sage sauce.
This brown butter sage sauce will pair perfectly with a variety of seasonal raviolis, including the Trader Joe’s pumpkin ravioli.
